Sukhothai. Great Thai Food in Arlington

Sukhothai is a small, family-operated, Thai restaurant in Arlington off Fielder road. I like it as a restaurant for a small group, here's why:
  1. The food is good, really good. I had the mixed vegetables with beef, Thai hot, and it is fresh and very hot. Several in our family had the chicken curry and loved it.
  2. The plates are served hot as they are prepared. This might be off-putting to some. I like it. As the cook is plating his dishes they are served, which means your food is right off the stove. We had a party of eight and the last person served was a few minutes behind the first.
  3. It is quiet. The music is not blaring and the room is small so it is easy to carry on table conversations.
  4. BYOB. I don't always like this but for family outings it is great. Eight of us enjoyed dinner, great food and service, and several bottles of wine and the bill (before tip) was only $100. (Come to think of it, my wife and I don't drink, Elizabeth is pregnant, so that leaves 5 people with three bottles, one of them the extra large bottle . . .)
  5. When you make frequent visits to a small, family owned restaurant you begin to feel like family with the owners, staff, and other frequent visitors. A good meal is about good food and drink in a pleasant setting with free-flowing conversation and somebody else doing the dishes. If you are fortunate enough to have that -- "The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places." Psalm 16.

Great assessment... I felt the same way when I went.

I'm still not sure if it'll bump out Thai Tina's, but it's good.

For a good 'value' Thai, Junsuree Thai on Magnolia serves a curry lunch special for $7 with soup, spring roll, curry dish, and a coconut tapioca.

Not a bad price and it's actually tastey and not sloppy.

Thanks Jake, Thai Tina's I will try -- if you have time let's meet up for coffee next week. . .

Next time you eat at Sukothai, make it a Tuesday night when the knitting group is at the Starbuck's on Fielder and Randol Mill. We miss your lady. And we'd let you hang out with us :)

Sukhothai has some of the best Thai dishes I've ever had (especially their Thai Basil). And I would always get it Turbo (hotter than Thai Hot), which will definitely light you up, if you enjoy that kind of thing.

On the down side (oh jeez, here I go... forgive me), they tend to be... well... cheap. Their appetizers are pretty sad and chintzy. And they always charge for extra rice (and they give very small portions to begin with), no matter how much of a regular you are. It's a small matter, I know, but we drove there (~30 minutes) from NE Tarrant almost weekly for nearly 3 years straight, and they didn't seem to care one way or the other if we were there or not. So we stopped going a couple of years ago, unfortunately.

We do miss their unique flavors. But, on the other hand, we do have a better place (IMO) in NE Tarrant now with Sea Siam in Keller, a restaurant I cannot say enough good things about. I do hope you come up this way and try them out at some point!

RJG -- Yea, I can see your point, the appetizers were a little meager.
Lynn -- you never know we may surprise you.
