Breakfast Cereals. Sugar Pops are Tops!

A Facebook comment got me thinking about my childhood breakfast cereal of choice. In those days the choices were fewer and the product less nutritional (not that there is anything wrong with that). This is seen by use of the words "Sugar" in the cereal titles. Frosted Sugar Flakes, Sugar Pops, Sugar Smacks. "Want some sugar on those Frosty Flakes, son?" Ah, the good old days.

My favorite all-time is Sugar-Pops. I am not sure from what grain they derive their body, but they had a distinctive sweet, vanilla-like flavor, and they stayed crispy in milk. I would eat them today if I could.

And yours?

(Facebook insider comment: Stop the cocoa puff!)

I have two words for you my friend:

Fruit Loops

Oh Kenny, Fruit Loops, ick! No, I still maintain that nothin' can beat the crisp, chocolaty goodness of the cocoa puff, when paired with ice cold, creamy whole milk. Ahhhh.

Now I have to admit I've never actually tried a bowl of Sugar Pops (I think they're called Corn Pops now?), so perhaps I should sample them before making a final judgment! ;-)

It is very funny that the cereal manufacturers have taken the word "Sugar" out of all the cereal names (although I'm not convinced they are any more nutritious, haha)! Do you remember "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs" from the Calvin & Hobbes strip? "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs: They don't contain a single natural ingredient or essential vitamin, but they do supply 100% of the recommended daily allowance of caffeine." Haha!

And don't forget Count Chocula, though I think I was older when it came out.

Yes, Sugar Pops were a favorite, at least until Alphabits came around.

Kenneth: Fruit Loops. Yes, in my top 3. And honestly the Fruit Loop advertising plan over the years is one of those standards for marketing degrees. Now I do admit to liking the coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs line.

Rambler: Alpha Bits. Oh baby, forgot about those bits of goodness.

Katerina: It's just that the chocolate in the morning taste doesn't work for me. Same on Count Chocula.

Nevertheless, I respect your appreciation of the non-nutritional.

I had breakfast this morning at Paul's Donuts. They have a new display of single-serving cereals. Had there been Corn/Sugar Pops, I would have had some in your honor. However, it was all healthy Cheerios, Total, and the like, so I settle for a breakfast sandwich and cinnamon roll.

:-(

Tell those guys I said hi. They still make as a good a donut as can be had. I used to take Sammi there (granddaughter) on Sunday.

I remember that cereal display. Sorry about the nutritional swing we are all on. I can taste those corn puffed sugar pops now. Come to think of it, I think they are corn.

Thanks.
