Eating healthy..umm, healthily ..urr, healthfully

Eating . . . better.

I want to eat more healthfully. But I also want to learn Italian, it doesn't mean I am doing it. I read today, a list of the foods that we should eat for good health and beets was at the top of the list. Beets. They call it the "new spinach" because it contains antioxidants called betalins. Great.

Big problemo: it tastes bad. If I smell a pickled beet I get nauseous. How anyone can eat something like that is beyond me. Besides, it's purple. People don't eat things blue or purple. There is a reason you never see street-side beet stands. Nobody eats them.

Another healthy food on the list is Swiss chard. No thanks. Tumeric? I don't know what that is, so I can't say. Cinnamon is on the list and I like that, but it needs a little un-healthy sugar to make it palatable. Sardines? Nope. Cabbage was on the list and I have to say that I like cabbage as long it's not made into sauerkraut. People that eat sauerkraut have no sense of smell.

A couple days ago, I wrote a little piece on John Adams. He lived to be 90. You think he ate beets or Swiss Chard? I think not. Case closed.

Cabbage is best fried in bacon fat, which I believe knocks it off the healthy list.

Too bad.

Scientists report that that bacon makes everything on that list better.

If you watch the Office, you'll remember that road-side beet stands do exist. Dwight Schrute talks about them when explaining how you put the best beets on top to attract buyers. Not pertinent to your post, but you reminded me of that.

I read the same New York Times article. I have to admit, I've never made beets myself, but I had a wonderful beet salad once at a resturant. Apparently there are several different varieties of beets, and not all are purple.

But I agree, what the heck is swiss chard?

All good additions.

Ramb: -Bacon with cabbage sounds delicious.

Anony: I will have to find that Office show. Sounds very funny.

Becca: I will take you word for it. And I have never nor will I ever eat Swiss chard.

Glad to see sardines on the list. They are delicious, and now I feel healthier for eating them.
